Innovative technologies meet Copenhagen's environmental goals


Why was an innovative solution considered?

After setting a goal to become carbon neutral by 2025, Copenhagen is now changing the way it manages energy. A key requirement to achieve this goal is a significant reduction in energy consumption from street lighting. For this purpose, it was necessary to replace almost 20,000 street lamps.

The City of Copenhagen's lighting objectives were as follows:

  • replace high-pressure sodium lamps on urban residential roads, major streets and highways with efficient, custom-designed LED lamps;
  • achieve significant energy and CO2 savings so that the city can reach its goal of carbon neutrality by 2025;
  • improve the quality of street lighting for greater safety and comfort;
  • combine lighting control with traffic density data to adjust lighting levels in the future based on road use;
  • create a central management system for efficient management and control of street lighting.


What was done differently?

The public contracting authority chose the competitive dialogue procedure. The evaluation criteria were balanced: 25% price, 25% organization and execution of the task, 20% lighting solutions, 30% energy and environmental properties. The process took 16 months until the contract was signed.


What was the result?

By switching to LED lamps, energy consumption was reduced by 57%, and at the same time, the carbon footprint and maintenance costs were reduced (1.6 million EUR per year for an investment of 26 million EUR).
